Petroleum Product Quality Testing Programme

Practical field-testing training for petroleum wholesalers, retailers, depot operators and fuel handlers who need to inspect, test, document and escalate petroleum product quality concerns.

Programme purpose

This programme teaches field-level petroleum product quality control. It helps learners understand what can be checked on site, how to record evidence properly, when a problem should be escalated, and when laboratory testing is required.

Who should enrol

  • Fuel wholesalers and traders
  • Petrol station owners and managers
  • Depot operators and fuel handlers
  • Fleet and generator-fuel users
  • Product receiving teams
  • Complaint-handling and quality-control staff

Practical outcome

Learners should be able to follow a basic fuel-quality workflow: identify the issue, sample carefully, test where appropriate, record evidence, interpret field results, preserve documents and escalate correctly.

Detailed curriculum

1. Petroleum product quality risk

Why fuel quality matters, common commercial losses, contamination types, reputational risk, customer complaints and limits of field testing.

2. Petroleum product basics

Petrol, diesel and illuminating paraffin basics; density awareness; colour, clarity and product appearance; how supply-chain events can create quality concerns.

3. Fuel sampling fundamentals

Clean containers, representative samples, tank and delivery samples, retained samples, labelling, sealing, chain-of-custody basics and sample contamination risks.

4. Visual inspection

Clarity, haze, phase separation, sediment, colour differences, odour observations and visible water or particulate matter.

5. Hydrometer testing

Hydrometer selection, cylinder use, avoiding bubbles, reading the meniscus, recording observed density and understanding common user errors.

6. Diesel density and temperature correction

Why temperature matters, observed density vs density at 15°C, simple correction logic, recordkeeping and when formal ASTM/API tables are required.

7. Water contamination checks

Free water, suspended water, tank dipping, water detection paste, typical symptoms, risk points and immediate response actions.

8. DensiTest and rapid field screening

Using rapid field checks as screening tools, documenting results, understanding limitations and linking practical tests to FuelGuard product workflows.

9. Delivery acceptance workflow

Pre-delivery checks, delivery note review, product confirmation, sample retention, density observation, water checks, photos and evidence storage.

10. Fuel incident record pack

What to record when a complaint arises: supplier, product, delivery note, COA, photos, test results, tank details, vehicle/equipment complaints and timeline.

11. Interpretation and escalation

How to avoid overclaiming field-test results; when to notify suppliers; when to quarantine stock; when to escalate to laboratory testing or specialist review.

12. Internal quality-control system

Building a repeatable fuel-quality routine with receiving procedures, staff roles, testing logs, retained samples, incident registers and management review.
